Goonies Movie Poster

I created a series of icons/symbols to tell the plot of the film The Goonies on a 18 x 24” movie poster. Icons are a universal and powerful tool that are used for communication, signage, meaning through metaphor, and more. Through this project I explored illustration techniques, creating recognizable icons/logotypes, simplifying designs, picking color palettes, and the purpose behind designs. I worked on limiting the complexity of my icons so they would be readable even on a smaller scale. I used a hand-drawn style because the movie is about children, and I wanted to add this component into the poster. I used neon colors to resemble the 80s, specifically MTV television that was being aired at the time this film was produced, rather than the traditional darker colors of the film. I wanted there to be consistency within the icons so I made them all look like stickers, again to resemble the children-like nature of the project. I laid out the icons I created chronologically in the style of a map to tell the plot of the film, and I used a map layout because it is symbolic to the movie. When creating a custom typography I focused on making it loose and childlike and added the skull and X for the resemblance of the map.
